The Brooklyn Museum is my favorite museum in New York City. I go there often. I also love the Botanical Gardens next door, and the summer concerts at the Prospect Park Bandshell. A gourmand friend who lives in the area turned me on to another of Brooklyn's gems, Cheryl's Global Soul Cafe.
The quality of the ingredients is superb, and the preparation is consistently tasty and creative. This should be no surprise to those who know Chef Cheryl Smith, who starred in her own show, Melting Pot, on the Food Network. She is a skillful creator of fusion dishes, with solid expertise in traditional French, pan- Asian, Moroccan, and U.S. Southern cuisines.
My first visit was in winter, about a year ago. Menus are based on seasonal, always fresh, often organic produce. The split pea soup was hearty and seasoned just enough to highlight the freshness of the veggies and legumes. I admit it was as good or better than Abuelita's made-from-scratch, definitely memorable for this lover of split pea soup. So that got my attention. We shared lip-smacking jerk wings and a delicious salad. My less-inhibited friends shared a praline confection they swore was to die for; go see for yourself. Portions are rather generous, for this quality of food. On other visits we have enjoyed expertly grilled burgers, juicy curried mussels, and a wonderful mushroom quiche, much better than any I've had in Manhattan.
Brunch is just as spectacular; the included drink or juice and coffee or tea make it quite a good deal (get there early, word is out!). I can particularly recommend the fresh-made hash topped by a perfectly poached-to-order egg. My carb-loving friends vouch for the pancakes and french toast, and a number of children (of all ages) assured me emphatically that Cheryl's muffins and other pastries and desserts are off the wall (I should hope so!). We coffee lovers are quite pleased with the house joe; a variety of teas is available.
Recently we visited to conduct an interview for Mi Apogeo in the delightful rear garden, a little green oasis surrounded by trees. Chef Cheryl was there, as always, busy but willing to chat with her guests, and always welcoming. She is an amazing, accomplished, self-made woman, with boundless talent, warmth, and patience. We are so glad to celebrate her success.
So next time you're in Brooklyn, stop by Cheryl's. Enjoy her good food, and give her some love, from her friends at Mi Apogeo.
