Summer Concerts Offer World-Class Performers, In a Unique Urban Experience
One of the highlights of summer in New York is the quality and quantity of music and arts in outdoor performances. Never mind the sweltering waits at bus stops and subway platforms, the occasional summer blackouts, flooding thunderstorms, and passersby with sketchy hygiene. The summer concerts will make it all worthwhile.
Whether Summerstage in Central Park, or Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park, or South Street Seaport, these venues offer unique opportunities to see everything from local garage bands to world-class megastars, free, or for a very small donation.
They also offer unique opportunities to observe the many variations of Homo Novi Eboraci (native New Yorkers). The audience at a typical Summerstage event is multicultural, multiethnic, and multigenerational. Chatting up folks on line at several different events, we found students, artsy types, fans of the headlining act, fans of the opening act, people on dates, a handful of tourists, and retired civil servants who attend everything, just because they can.
In recent years, we have enjoyed stars like Eddie Palmieri, Ruben Blades and La India, new music from Manu Chao, Aterciopelados, and Julieta Venegas, amazing dance from top-rated troupes such as Noche Flamenca, and world music greats from every continent.
Still on tap for Summer 2008 are Erykah Badu at Wingate, Nuovo Tango at Lincoln Center, and Los Lonely Boys at Summerstage. We will highlight Latino performers here in Onda Local, at MiApogeo.com.
