No one ever said getting beautiful eyebrows was gonna be easy, painless, hassle, or mania free.
Friends are always baffled and not so sympathetic whenever I begin whining about having to make a 45 minute trek from Upper Manhattan out to Queens just to get my eyebrows threaded. Sure, threading salons have sprung up around Manhattan these last couple of years, and yes the time I'll save by getting my eyebrows threaded in a local salon is worth more than the buck or two I'll save getting my eyebrows threaded in Queens, but still I must argue that not all eyebrow threaders are the same nor equally talented. The fact of the matter is that well-defined eyebrows enhance the eyes and frame a face in the same way that a good haircut reinvents and transforms a person. First-hand victims and innocent bystanders alike can agree that perpetually surprised eyebrows (chola look anyone?) are just as bad, and maybe even worse, than an untouched unibrow. In light of the former, I get equally uptight thinking of someone (mis)shaping my eyebrows as I do thinking of shears running through my hair.
With that said, once a month (maybe even twice if I have the time or if my brows are really outta control) I'll hop on the seven train to Queens to get my eyebrows threaded by one of two people alive whom I can trust with my brows. Her name is Saibby and gives me 30 seconds to tell her I'd like "thin and arched" brows before she asks me to hold the skin above my eyes taut, bending over my face to thread my brows. When I return home an hour-plus commute later I have new and better-defined arches than I would had I gone with anyone else or if I had tried other depilatory methods like waxing or tweezing.
Eyebrow threading is an ancient Indian hair removal technique that involves a 100% cotton thread and a twisting motion of the hands that pulls out rows of hairs from the follicle. Unlike waxing that involves harsh products and with time may lead to eyebrow sagging and tweezing that can cause nicks and scars, threading prevents ingrown hairs and lasts longer than waxing. Since women with brown skin tend to have curved hair follicles, this makes them more prone to ingrown hairs and painful bumps.
Whatever your preferred choice of hair removal be, indubitably the process will be pain, hassle, and mania ridden. But whatever the price to pay, expertly done brows somehow seem to make the trip all worthwhile.
